Crafts·man·ship: the quality of design and work shown in something made by hand; artistry.
It’s in the graceful edge and silky glaze of a ceramic bowl, in the plucking of a perfect tomato and honing it into a sauce that lingers on the palate. There are forms revealing themselves in grains of wood, there is the undeniable excellence of wine in a glass.
Passion plays a part in the makers who use their hands and hearts to bring to the world that which didn’t exist before. Raw materials of grapes, of clay, of hewn wood and heirloom seeds are transformed by fire and sun, water and will, by skilled hands following unknowable creativity into something that pleases the human spirit.
Napa Valley is home to scores of renowned craftspeople and some of the country’s most collectible wines: those bearing the Premiere Napa Valley label. These micro-lot wines (only between 60 and 240 bottles are produced) are made specifically for an annual, private auction, open to members of the wine trade, who in turn make the bottles available to their customers and collectors around the world.
The limited-edition nature of Premiere Napa Valley wines allows winemakers the leeway to be highly creative, showcasing their craftsmanship to explore, perhaps, a very specific and special part of their vineyard, an unusual grape variety, clone or blend and collaborative efforts between winemakers. The resulting wines are one-of-a-kind; once each tiny allocation is gone it will never again be replicated.
The winning bidder of this lot will be immersed over four days into the worlds of four of Napa Valley’s most talented craftspeople: Renee Ary, Duckhorn Vineyards winemaker; Chef Christopher Kostow of The Charter Oak restaurant; Jeff Menchaca of Jeff Menchaca Fine Woodworking; and Nikki Ballere Callnan and Will Callnan of NBC Pottery.
Each day will find you brought into the cellar, garden, kitchen and studios of these dedicated artisans to learn some of the ways in which they coax the natural beauty of Napa Valley into a bottle of wine, a meal on a plate, plates upon a table and yes, perhaps, the table itself.
Your party will get behind-the-scenes access to a Duckhorn Vineyards Napa Valley blend tasting, discovering the many variables that winemaker Renee Ary considers when choosing the final composition of a Premiere Napa Valley wine.
You’ll harvest produce with Chef Christopher Kostow and feel the heft of a knife in hand as that produce is brought to life in dishes that speak of the care with which your just-picked vegetables have been grown.
In the hillsides, you’ll help give shape to a one-of-a-kind ceramic piece or pottery set with Nikki Ballere Callnan and Will Callnan. Feel wet clay spinning in your hands on a potter's wheel or apply a shimmering glaze to a sculpted form.
Master woodworker Jeff Menchaca may have you choose a particular piece of wood to plane or notch or dream of a design that will bring one of his timeless pieces of furniture into your home.
Speaking of home, yours will be filled with 12 bottles of some of the rarest Premiere Napa Valley wines, donated by their sole owners.
