From 1990 to 1999, a string of excellent vintages of Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa Valley made a pivotal change in the world of wine. No other region of the world matched the quality and consistency of Napa’s amazing vintages, year after year. It was perfect timing: 20 years of winemaking experience since the 1972-73 renaissance of new winery establishments dovetailed with the exceptional grape harvests.

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon took off: winemakers no longer looked to mirror European forebears, but focused on the valley’s individual nested appellations, vineyards and their own styles. Now you can own some of the remarkable wines of the Mighty ’90s and taste the legendary 1978 vintage as you celebrate the unique personality of Calistoga.

Start your experience in the glow of an evening bonfire reception in front of the timeless Chateau, constructed in 1886 to resemble an English Gothic castle. Feast on a beautifully crafted dinner prepared by Solage Resort’s Executive Chef Gustavo Rios. Your hosts, Chateau Montelena CEO and master winemaker Bo Barrett and Heidi Barrett, renowned Napa Valley winemaker and owner of La Sirena, will serve select wines from the Chateau library, including the legendary 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon, the first estate-bottled vintage produced.

Learn about the well-established ageability of Chateau Montelena wines, developing character and complexity over time, as you taste through selections of the winery’s extensive library.

The next morning, after Model Bakery English muffins and Yo El Rey Organic coffee, relax into a driving tour of the Calistoga AVA (American Viticultural Area). Bo Barrett, who authored the petition to designate Calistoga as its own nested appellation, will act as tour guide of Napa’s northernmost AVA’s distinct viticultural features, including topography and geology.

Then enjoy a special lunch on one of the islands of the estate’s Jade Lake, considered one of the valley’s most beautiful sanctuaries. As you admire the surrounding weeping willows and native fauna, the Chateau’s pitmaster, Joe Beck, will prepare a delicious barbecue. Winemaker Matt Crafton (a native Virginian who appreciates proper barbecue) will showcase library wines from the Chardonnay and Zinfandel collections.

Your final Calistoga experience includes a private lesson on charcuterie production from local charcuterie master Tony Incontro. A third-generation pork aficionado of Sicilian and Calabrian descent, Tony worked in many fine dining restaurants before founding Incontro Cured, where he focuses on artisanal meat curing and fine wine collaborations. Taste through his aged, cured meats, learn how to break down a hog, and fill your freezer with mangalitsa, the “Wagyu of the pork industry,” provided by Tim Winkler of Winkler Wooly Pigs.

Your last day will inspire the outdoor adventurer in you. A morning excursion for a round of championship clay shooting for 10 with team Montelena at Wing & Barrel Ranch in Sonoma. A certified NSCA instructor will be there to teach you how to shoot–both newbies and experts alike on the state-of-the-art, 25-acre shooting course. Wing & Barrel Ranch is the most highly anticipated sporting and outdoor lifestyle private club in Northern California. With this experience, you will receive an intimate firsthand look of what’s to come with the brand new clubhouse, combining culinary arts, vintners, and the great outdoors. Your trip concludes with a catered lunch paired with Chateau Montelena Wines as you enjoy the sprawling views of the mountains surrounding Napa and Sonoma County’s wine country overlooking the clear waters of Sonoma Creek.
