3 Liter and Luncheon

1 bottle of Napa Valley wine, as noted
Picnic luncheon and tasting for 6

This etched and hand-painted 3-liter bottle of Black Chicken is one of just six produced from the 2010 vintage. Vibrant, zesty, lush, fruit-driven and spicy, this is Napa Valley Zinfandel at its zenith.

In addition to this gorgeous, rare Zin trophy, you and five friends are invited to a sumptuous picnic lunch and tasting of Black Chicken and four vineyard-designates--Varozza, Kraft, Grande and Moore--at the Biale winery in Napa's Oak Knoll District.

The story of Black Chicken Zinfandel began when a teenaged Aldo Biale would make a few barrels of Zinfandel that he would sell around town to friends and neighbors--along with white chickens, eggs, fruits and vegetables. In those days, his home phone was a party line that allowed nosy neighbors to listen in to conversations, so Aldo developed a code name to keep his clandestine wine operation a secret. A 'black chicken' referred not to poultry but to a jug of Zinfandel from the barrels hidden in the barn.

Biale Zinfandel went legitimate in 1991 with the founding of Robert Biale Vineyards, and in 1999 Biale produced its first legal Black Chicken from the vineyard growing next to the old chicken coop.
